PASC Center Stage
Like a play or a concert, experiencing an artwork is a performative act; it is a presentation of creative expression staged for the public. The frame is the stage; the performance starts when you begin looking and ends when you step away.
PASC: Center Stage, is an exhibition featuring a variety of theatrical artworks by artists in the PASC program. Presented at The Gallery at Cherry Hill at The Village Theater, it reflects the diverse ways the stage is activated and utilized, and how artists are inspired by theatricality.
Referencing pop culture, dance, music, TV, and film, these artists present a range of performative themes. Lauren Williams’ Nature in Black and White, a monochrome painting, can be interpreted as a visual echo of the silent film era, evoking its quiet drama through her distinct approach to landscape. Colorful abstractions by Lauren Samuels and Julieann Dombrowski, introduce dynamic and vibrant color fields, and set the scene, the rhythm and the mood. Rodney Stephens’ Miracles From Heaven, a film poster for a fictional film, gently challenges societal norms, complete with a PG-13 cautionary label. And artworks by Lewis Foster and Rubin Bates celebrate Detroit’s own The Supremes, each artist capturing the group’s legacy through their individual stylistic lens.

This arrangement reflects the layered, interconnected nature of the PASC community, with its many colors, textures, and differences coming together on the gallery walls. The artworks featured are created in a variety of mediums and present a variety of subjects, from imagined scenes to surprising abstractions, to dense elemental patterns reflecting varied light and unexpected harmonies.
